Medieval Engineers is the second title by Keen Software House, based in the Czech Republic. Their first title, Space Engineers, has done very well and has shown what a space construction game can look like at its best. Medieval Engineers takes this same design methodology back to the 5th-15th centuries and the technologies available then to build all sorts of technological wonders with wood, rope and stone.
Currently, the game is in early alpha, and is a creative sandbox. The physics of the world and materials are in place, and one of the first things that was implemented; man made structures are fully destructible, and collapse if not made with structural integrity in mind.
Though the game is still very early in development, it shows signs of great promise, from a company with a proven track record of delivering on their promises. The building is very gratifying, and the kicking down of one’s own sand castle is no less gratifying. The destruction physics are very well polished, and the design is great. Recently barbarians were added, so you can test the imperviousness of your creations.
It’s also very pretty, and with a very nice soundtrack. Currently it is a sandbox, but I believe that survival elements will be implemented later.
As early access games go, this is quite polished, though I have had some framerate issues. Optimization will get better as the game is developed; this was an issue early on in Space Engineers as well. There is a lot to play around with, and this is a wonderful sandbox engineering game!
