Don’t Starve Together: Beautiful Misery, Now With Friends!

Don’t Starve Together is the expansion into multiplayer of Don’t Starve, a third person survival game by Klei Entertainment. In Don’t Starve Together, you spawn in the wilderness with nothing but the clothes on your back, and must frantically gather supplies before the darkness comes and kills you.

Who do I want to be?
Who do I want to be?
Well... crap.
Well… crap.
Can I make anything? ... nope.
Can I make anything? … nope.
Watch for enemies, and gather supplies!

Ooh! A base!

And a friend! Say cheese!

I love this game.
I love this game.

This game has the familiar scavenging crafting survival system familiar to many, but it is much a much harsher mistress than other titles with similar themes. You will need to spend much of your time foraging for food, trying to keep your sanity, and building defenses and weapons for the rapidly increasing difficulty. Everything in the game from horned toads to dogs to giant tree people to enormous birds is trying to kill you. Even the passive animals can turn hostile under certain conditions. This game is cruel, and it makes you like it that way.

With a friend, this is not so much an easier experience as it is a different one. You can work together to kill more of the dangers around you, but the difficulty ramps up significantly. Furthermore, if one of you dies, the others start taking massive hits to their sanity, which leads to shadowy monsters coming after you to eat you.

The game experience is very similar to Don’t Starve, and is fairly stable, minus some occasional lag. It’s a fun little game to play with friends, with beautiful artwork! The soundtrack also deserves a mention. This game is certainly worth a look.
