BROFORCE IS AN- *ahem* Broforce is an intense twitch platformer shooter with destructible environments. A title made by Free Lives games, Broforce is a love letter to 80s and 90s over-the-top action flicks.
In Broforce, you start with a small selection of characters which expands to include many of the iconic legends of 80s and 90s action flicks.
A small subset of characters (26 total as of this review)
You unlock heroes by rescuing them from captivity; as you go through each level, there will be large boxes with a person inside. Breaking the box changes your hero and gives you an extra life, which allows you to test the different abilities of each hero.
Each hero plays very differently, and has ‘Bro’ as part of their name. Bro Dredd, shown in the top right, has homing bullets as his main attack and player controlled rockets as a secondary. Brodell Walker, the Texas Ranger on the right, has a shotgun blast as his primary and an airstrike as his secondary. Every character also has a stealth knife attack which can also be used to throw small mooks off cliffs.
A major appeal of the game is the destructible environment, which makes this a unique side scrolling shooter. Different characters have different amounts they can dig with their attacks; Dredd takes many shots to shoot just one block while The Brominator mows down everything in his path. Each character therefore has a different style of gameplay and different challenges; The Brominator has immense knockback, which can throw you off ledges to your doom, but can also be used as a way to quickly get to the end of a level by jumping and firing backwards- if you don’t fall in a pit and die, or get shot.
Every character is also a one hit point wonder, and any enemy can kill you in one hit. This makes the gameplay much more challenging, and requires a combination of quick reflexes and tactical planning to clear levels quickly and effectively.
The game also features some amazing boss fights, better than many I have seen in a while. You will have to time your attacks, dodge, find weakpoints- all in classic 2D shooter style.
The art style deserves a mention, as does the hub map. The pixellated graphics are reminiscent of older titles, of course, but have some very nice touches that add charm to the game. Whenever your character fires, for example, they grit their teeth in the image of their face at the bottom of the screen. Bullet casings are individually modeled as they come out, so you can see where you are laying a hail of gunfire. The hub map is a little touch that adds to the game; you control a little helicopter, which you fly around to select levels- or fly around the world map for a bit, just exploring.
There are large propane tanks on the map, which can be ridden for a short time before they explode; they give an indication by shaking when they are about to fly off. The graphics are endearing, and make the massive destruction you are causing take on a silly light, instead of being grim and dark. Each level also has its own flavor; the background changes, and environmental hazards such as mines are marked and differ on different levels.
Overall, this is a great little twitch platformer/shoot ’em up. If you like 2D shooters where thinking can sometimes yield better results than going in all guns blazing, this is the game for you!
