All who pre-ordered NBA 2K16, you will be getting your game tomorrow. Personally, I could not be more excited for this year’s iteration of NBA 2K. Last year many people voiced a disdain for what was an extremely buggy and problematic game that seemed to introduce as many new bugs as it did new features. This year, however, shows promise with a slew of original, well thought out “My Career” features that NBA fans have been dreaming about for years.
One addition that instantly caught my eye was the new off day mechanic in “My Career”. This year, in lieu of automatically simulating until the next game, you will be able to make decisions on how to spend your free time. This can range from endorsement deals, making connections with fellow players, or even participating in live, player controlled drills and practices providing your player with unique benefits ranging from player badges to player skill increases. If 2K can successfully balance the work/ reward of the live drills, the Off-Day dynamic stands to be one of the most promising additions to NBA 2K16.
Not only did “My Career” receive some much needed off the court attention, it also received a story overhaul. Previously, the storyline felt extremely cheesy and lacked depth and attention to detail.
This year, 2K has convinced famous movie director, writer, and producer Spike Lee to write a new story from the ground up. Utilizing Spike Lee’s experience with story-telling, there is great potential for a captivating story to accompany your created player on his journey through the league. A riveting, well delivered story will enhance the already fun experience of “My Career” making the journey all the more immersive and exciting providing players with the motivation to see what is coming next.
With a newly fleshed out “My Career” containing what will hopefully be a meaningful and exciting story working in tandem with all new game mechanics, there seems to be more to NBA 2K than ever before. With several game physics and overall game play tweaks as well, NBA 2K16 is shaping up to be the most robust and highly polished basketball game to date and I could not be more excited.
